Our Mission

Prevent osteoporosis and broken bones, promote strong bones for life and reduce human suffering through programs of public and clinician awareness, education, advocacy, and research.

Our Strategic Plan 2022-2024

This strategic plan outlines the impact we aim to have on improving bone health and minimizing the effect of osteoporosis in America and how we will achieve this. It addresses our dual focus on prevention and disease management and supports our call to action: Healthy Bones, Build Them for Life.®

Educate People About Bone Health Throughout the Lifespan

More people will know what to do at every stage of life to build and maintain strong bones and prevent osteoporotic fractures.

Metrics for Success:

  • Government agencies will include osteoporosis and bone health in public health information, campaigns, and conferences
  • Other health advocacy organizations will recognize the importance of bone health and recommend BHOF for more information
  • Increase in bone health knowledge and information sharing among health organizations representing people throughout the lifespan, including organizations serving patients with comorbidities
  • Increase in bone density screenings for people at high risk for osteoporosis
  • More people will visit the BHOF website and social media platforms
  • There will be increased media coverage about bone health and osteoporosis

  • Update the BHOF’s website and other tools
  • Create strategic alliances with other health organizations
  • Add members to the Coalition to Strengthen Bone Health
  • Outreach to Women’s Health Offices at Federal Agencies
  • Engage State Legislatures in osteoporosis awareness and prevention initiatives

Empower People with Osteoporosis to Live Longer, Fracture Free Lives

People will be informed about the risk factors for osteoporosis, the available treatment options, and how to prevent future fractures and will be supported by BHOF and the bone health community.

Metrics for Success:

  • More people will connect through BHOF’s programs, local support groups, and online community
  • BHOF is recognized as a trusted partner and leading resource for information and support
  • Patients report greater confidence in managing their bone health
  • Downward trend in incidence of fragility fractures in Medicare population

Strategies:

  • Provide tools and resources to help patients and their care partners navigate decisions about osteoporosis management
  • Offer recommendations on nutrition and physical activity to improve bone health
  • Connect patients and care partners to BHOF experts and resources
  • Publish reports from findings in the Healthy Bones, Build Them for Life® Patient Registry
  • Engage patients and care partners in program planning and evaluation

Ensure Comprehensive Post-Fracture Care

Obtaining comprehensive, coordinated post-fracture care will be simple, affordable, and available to everyone who breaks a bone over the age of 50.

Metrics for Success:

  • Advances in healthcare and health policy related to bone health
  • Greater access to post-fracture care and treatment to address systemic inequities in healthcare based on gender, race, geography, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status
  • Increase in number and sustainability of post-fracture care pathways (Fracture Liaison Services) nationwide
  • Improved care coordination as reported by patients with osteoporosis and/or their care partners

Strategies:

  • Increase FLS education, growth, and reimbursement opportunities
  • Commission research on barriers to post-fracture care for people of color, rural communities, and socio-economically disadvantaged communities
  • Utilize learnings from FLS Pilot Program in NC/MD to create practical, replicable processes and tools for systems approach to FLS
  • Drive consensus and consolidation of osteoporosis screening and treatment guidelines among medical societies
  • Provide osteoporosis clinical education and engagement opportunities
  • Advocate for insurance company incentives to improve post-fracture care

Expand Resources and Reach

BHOF will grow its revenue by engaging more people, foundations, and companies in ways that help increase fundraising, improve the organization’s infrastructure and capacity, and provide opportunities to reach younger and more diverse audiences.

Metrics for Success:

  • Expanding methods of revenue generation and increasing overall revenue
  • Diversifying Board of Trustees (BOT)
  • Increasing the number of staff and volunteers and engaging them to meet organizational objectives

Strategies:

  • Balance the composition of the BOT between clinical/research and public/philanthropic trustees and expand recruitment efforts to increase diversity
  • Secure new Corporate Advisory Roundtable (CAR) members and engage with full membership in new and relevant ways
  • Activate the Be Bone Strong team nationally
  • Utilize May’s National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month as a catalyst for fundraising
