The Robert F. Gagel, M.D. Community Leadership Award recognizes a healthcare professional who has made outstanding contributions to improving osteoporosis care and increasing community awareness about bone health. This award will be presented annually to a healthcare professional residing and working in the United States or its territories.
For 2025, the nomination period will be open from March 11-April 7. The Executive Committee of the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundationās (BHOFās) Board of Trustees will review nominations and select the recipient.
The award winner will be notified and announced in May, in recognition of Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month. The recipient will receive a plaque and a financial award (currently $1,000) to support community service efforts initiatives related to osteoporosis and bone health.
Award Criteria
- Must be a licensed and credentialed healthcare provider who dedicates at least 25% of their practice to treating osteoporosis patients, or an individual who has developed clinical care models that enhance osteoporosis prevention and treatment.
- Eligible candidates may include medical doctors (MDs), doctors of osteopathy (DOs), individuals with a Ph.D., registered dietitians, physical therapists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, or exercise trainers.
- Must have a minimum of five years of medical practice or professional experience.
- Must demonstrate a strong commitment to ongoing professional development in the fields of bone and/or musculoskeletal health.
- Must have a proven impact on raising awareness and educating the local community about osteoporosis and bone health.

- At least one (maximum of three) letter(s) of recommendation from medical or health professionals within the nomineeās community (town, city, county, or state).
- At least one (maximum of three) letter(s) of recommendation from community leaders or organizations within the nomineeās community (town, city, county, or state).
